Paseo Alliance Luncheon, June 10, 2009
Hereford House, Town Center, Leawood
Thirty-one former Pirates gathered to
renew old friendships and meet others from different classes. The
participants' classes covered a 21-year span from 1946 to 1965, with the
majority from classes of the 1950's. There was a display of
memorabilia and a presentation on the history project that the Paseo
Alliance has begun.

Trudy
Hall and Baylor Edwards opened the luncheon at 12:15 pm.
The participants were in attendance and introduced themselves and gave a brief
biography.
Baylor passed out information about the Web site. Trudy explained how the
Alliance was started by Baylor Edwards, Doyce Gentry, and Roy Busdiecker with a
luncheon at the Hereford House. This is the second such meeting of the Paseo
Alliance.
Roy is the Webmaster for the Web site. Trudy explained how to navigate the site
and drill down to your class information.
Baylor stated that any class that is not on Web site and wants to be can contact
Roy. If you have a Web site and want us to link into it, not a problem. This
site is for all classes from 1926 to1990.
Trudy distributed photocopied pages from the 1927 Handbook. Baylor found this at
the library and copied it. A full copy is available. Trudy asked us to turn to a
certain page and we all sang the alma mater.
Baylor and Trudy have started a history project. Trudy passed out a History of
Paseo High School.
Three months ago the Alliance decided we needed to do something more. When the
Alliance was formed the priorities were to have a good Web site and
opportunities to socialize and that was it. Other organizations participate with
us but go in a different direction. Each is trying to do their thing such as
scholarship money for graduates.
We want to Increase our social activities like were having today but also want
to develop a history of Paseo.
Accumulated on the table in the middle are a lot of things. Trudy has been
buying yearbooks for several years. Thanks to everyone who contributed to our
display.
Sharon Teague McCone battled to save the school. She made paperweights of a
tower print. She has the crest that hung over one door.
Carole Hutchison spoke about funding. Several classes had a treasury for
reunions. Some class years donated $50 a year to our treasury and some didnt.
Some disbanded their treasury after a reunion. We buy food for picnics and cover
miscellaneous expenses such as copying charges, etc. Carole will accept small
donations. She is our treasurer. The bank account is at Valley View Bank. She
has gotten $5 and $20 checks from all over. She said people follow us on the Web
site.
Baylor related that several people contributed to the historical collection. He
and Trudy have taken it on themselves to organize a history. They are going to
keep passing things around.
They are looking for information sources. Trudy passed out a list of sources and
appealed to the people present to contribute information. They started with
early history and then got into the school district and then Paseo. The school
district has given a lot of archival stuff to the library. They are looking to
each of you to contribute.
Theodore Brown, a professor at UMKC, has written a history of KC during the
1960s as a doctoral project.
Trudy stated that the next sheet is a handout for Paseo Alliance contacts.
Please E-mail us with information. When anyone has some information, get in
touch with one of us on the Paseo Alliance contact page.
They spent 2.5 hours looking at a Western Historical Manuscript collection.
There were 16,000 boxes with information on desegregation. There were pictures
of superintendents found in the basement of a mans house. He collected them
from the trash when someone was going to throw them away.
Clive Coleman, interim superintendent, met with Trudy and Baylor. He was in
favor of the project but it died there.
They have information on each of the grade schools that fed to Paseo in 1926
when it opened. They can only find three or four pictures of any of the schools.
A picture was found of a 1915 Francis Willard garden, no school, just a garden.
We want your thoughts and ideas. Wed like for you to look through your
information and get back to us. Please contact us.
Wed like to interview peoplesuccessful people, politicians, movie stars, etc.
Baylor said that we had 10 minutes left and we promised the restaurant a
departure time of 1:30 pm.
Barbara Rosenfeld Cosner made a thank you speech to Baylor and Trudy.
We will post these minutes and pictures on the Web site. Please feel free to
stay talk, look, whatever, well be here to answer questions.
Thanks.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Bayley Herrin
(I apologize for any misspelled names.)
